EVIDENCE OF NON-SELECTIVE LEXICAL ACCESS IN CHILDREN FROM A PORTUGUESE-ENGLISH BILINGUAL SCHOOL

The issue of language selectivity regarding lexical access bilingual adults has been thoroughly reported in the literature. However, studies with children are still limited, especially Brazilian context. To fill this gap, present study was conducted goal investigating whether same cognate facilitation effect for is also true children. do so, two experiments were carried out. In Experiment 1, 53 Portuguese-English from 3rd and 7th grade took part a decision task which had Portuguese an English version. 2, 18 monolinguals performed version task. results 1 showed that evident groups bilinguals when L2- English, even though no statistical difference between found. When performing L1 – Portuguese, effect, suggests these participants not reached level proficiency L2 can influence processing. 2 monolinguals, indicating participants, task, indeed due to status words bilingual's languages. short, favor nonselective view perception cross similarity.
